5 Things to Know About Cavities and Cavity Symptoms

Maintaining good oral health is important for your overall health. By understanding the various cavity symptoms, you can learn more about your oral health and what you need to do to better yourself. If left untreated, cavities can become more serious and result in pain, discomfort, and even more severe dental problems. In this guide, we’ll look at some of the things you may not have known about cavity infection symptoms and what you can do about them.

1. Cavities are Contagious

While it might sound strange, most people don’t realize that the bacteria associated with cavities can be spread through saliva. Does that mean if you kiss someone who has cavities, you’re going to get cavities? Not necessarily. But sharing utensils and kissing can spread the cavity-causing bacteria which can increase your chances of getting cavities if you’re not careful.

2. Acidic Food Can Cause Cavities

While sugary foods are often blamed for cavities, acidic foods can also erode tooth enamel, making the teeth more susceptible to decay. Citrus fruits, carbonated drinks, and vinegar-based foods are examples of acidic items.

3. You Can Still Get Cavities if You Have Fillings

Just because you have a filling, it doesn’t mean you can’t get cavities. Cavities can develop on or around the filling and the only way you’ll be able to figure this out is with regular checkups. This issue applies to caps as well. If you have a capped tooth, it contains the infection underneath but your cavity may still be getting worse.

4. Dry Mouth Increases Risk of Cavities

Saliva plays a vital role in neutralizing acids and remineralizing tooth enamel. People with dry mouth conditions are more prone to cavities as their mouths lack the natural defense against acid attacks.

5. Cavities Aren’t Always Painful

In the early stages, cavities may not elicit any pain or discomfort, making them difficult to detect without regular dental check-ups and X-rays. By the time symptoms manifest, the decay may have progressed significantly.

What Are The Symptoms of a Cavity?

  1. Sensitivity –If you have increased sensitivity to cold, hot, sweet, or sour food, this could be a sign of a cavity.
  2. Tooth Pain – Persistent or occasional tooth pain or discomfort, especially when biting down or applying pressure, may indicate a cavity.
  3. Visible Damage – If you notice black or brown spots on your teeth or if you have any holes in the tooth, chances are you have a cavity in that tooth.

Final Thoughts

While it’s important to understand cavity symptoms, you want to make sure that you also understand the solution. Regular dental checkups, cleanings, and repair of all damaged teeth are essential to your quality of life. If you are experiencing any of these cavity pain symptoms, you’ll want to make a call right away. Looking for a dentist in Cary, NC? Browse our different dental services today!

Jill is an awesome hygienist. She really was thorough and explained a lot about the art of flossing. I was impressed with how detailed she was with my cleaning. Dr Ferzli was very nice and again through. The office staff was very efficient with patients and keeping social distancing and cleanliness. I was impressed with how they kept the flow going and was absolutely happy to wait in my car outside until they called me to come in to meet staff and hygienist. I had a full cleaning, and gum exam. I would definitely refer Smiles of Cary to my friends
