Why Your Child Should See a Dentist Early? When To Take Your Child to The Dentist

Getting your child started with good oral hygiene habits early is one of the best things you can do as a parent. As soon as you start seeing those first teeth erupt, it’s time to think about when to take your child to the dentist. In this guide, we’re going to look at some of the details behind your child’s first dentist visit. We’ll let you know how to know it’s time to go and what questions to ask once you’re there.

When Should a Child First See a Dentist

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends bringing your child to the dentist by their first birthday. During this initial visit, the dentist will check for any oral health issues, assess your child’s risk of tooth decay, and clean their teeth. They can also address any habits like thumb sucking that may impact tooth alignment. Ensuring they see a dentist at this age allows the dentist to catch potential issues early on. Waiting too long increases the risk of needing more invasive procedures. These procedures can cause discomfort and lead your child to associate the dentist with negative experiences.

Why is a Child’s First Dentist Visit So Important?

A child’s first dentist visit lays the groundwork for their oral health. There’s a lot of testing and different ways to pick up on issues early on in life. Being proactive can help catch small issues before they develop into more serious ones. The first visit also allows the dentist to assess the risk level of tooth decay. Some children are more prone to cavities than others. Early identification allows parents to take preventative action like fluoride treatments. The dentist can also demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques, helping to ingrain good habits.

How Can I Make My Child’s First Dentist Visit Easier?

What age should a child see a dentist? By age 1 is the standard, but that’s a very young age. You may think that your child will not behave properly for the dentist. This is a normal fear to have. It’s important to first choose a pediatric dentist . Their offices are bright, fun, and tailored specifically to make children comfortable. The staff are also highly trained to work with little ones Avoid telling scary stories about your own dental experiences so you don’t accidentally increase their worry. Be sure to let them bring something that provides them with comfort. If they have a stuffed animal or blanket that they like, this will help them feel more comfortable during their first experience.

How to Find a Dentist for My Child

Finding the right dentist is key to starting off on the right foot. Here are some tips for finding a good children’s dentist:
  • Ask around
  • Read reviews online
  • Tour the office
  • Ask about their approach to children

Jill is an awesome hygienist. She really was thorough and explained a lot about the art of flossing. I was impressed with how detailed she was with my cleaning. Dr Ferzli was very nice and again through. The office staff was very efficient with patients and keeping social distancing and cleanliness. I was impressed with how they kept the flow going and was absolutely happy to wait in my car outside until they called me to come in to meet staff and hygienist. I had a full cleaning, and gum exam. I would definitely refer Smiles of Cary to my friends
