Why Test?

Periodontal disease (gum disease) is a polymicrobial biofilm infection that results in the breakdown of tissue, bone, and ultimately tooth loss. This chronic infection will spread. Gum disease may start in the mouth, but it doesnt end there.

90% of the population has a form of gum disease. In some, it may be easy to spot. However, in a vast majority these very dangerous and damaging pathogens, linked to multiple systemic diseases, will present with no symptoms or pain until reaching very severe stages. This makes it easy to miss when only doing a perio probe or visual exam and why saliva testing is so important.

Left unchecked and untreated, these pathogens and their toxins remain hidden and multiplying deep inside pockets and under previous dental work. Not only will they continue to damage more of the surrounding soft tissue and bone supporting the teeth, they will also silently escape into the bloodsream.

Who Gets Tested?

  1. Test everyone!
  2. Patients with bleeding while charting or cleaning and those with mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis.
  3. Those patients with unexplained inflammatory biomarkers such as hsCRP.
  4. All patients pre and post restorative care procedures (braces, extraction, root canals, implants).
  5. Those currently pregnant or actively pursuing pregnancy.
  6. All patients at current risk of any systemic health disease.

How To Test?

  1. Collect 1 mL of patient saliva, place in postage paid box, & send sample off to the lab.
  2. Review results in 24-48 hours on secure HIPAA compliant portal including option to share with patients.
  3. Evaluate actionable clinical insights and determine next steps or provider hand-off collaborative treatment plan.
  4. Retest to monitor successful outcomes.

Assessment For Gingival And Periodontal Infections

  1. Test for Pathogens :
Test for the presence of high-risk oral pathogens for preclinical & clinical disease.
  2. Assess for Gingivitis :
1-3 mm probe depths with inflammation & bleeding is a clinical tissue infection called gingivitis.
  3. Assess for Periodontitis :
4 mm and greater probe depths with bone loss, inflammation, & bleeding is a clinical tissue and bone infection called periodontitis.
  4. Staging of Disease :
Stage 1: 1-2 mm CAL and max probe depth of 4 mm
Stage 2: 3-4 mm CAL, max probe depth 5 mm
Stage 3: 5mm or more CAL, probe depth 6 mm & more
Stage 4: Same as stage 3 with 5 or more teeth missing
  5. Grading of Disease :
Grade A: Slow with no CAL over 5 years
Grade B: Moderate is 2 mm or less of CAL over 5 years
Grade C: Rapid is 2 mm or more CAL over 5 year
