The Color of Teeth – What difference does it make?

Our teeth are made of the enamel, the dentin and pulp. The enamel is the top-most layer of our teeth and it comprises of minerals. It is one of the hardest substances in our body. It is also porous and can attract surface stains. The natural color of our teeth can be broadly classified into four categories which are reddish brown, reddish yellow, grey and reddish grey. The color of teeth varies from one person to the other depending on lifestyle, food habits, environmental factors, genetics and age of the individual. Consumption of certain fluids, certain habits and certain medications can stain the teeth to a great extent. Staining can make the teeth look unhealthy and less attractive. Following are some of the common causes for staining and discoloration of teeth.

  • Consumption of cola, wine and coffee
  • Smoking
  • More fluoride intake during childhood
  • An injury to the tooth that has infected the pulp
  • Enamel layer wearing out

A dentist examines the teeth and tries to find out the cause for discoloration before going ahead with tooth whitening. While surface stains can be cleared through regular tooth whitening procedures, there may be other steps that need to be taken to treat intrinsic stains.

Tooth Whitening at Smiles of Cary

Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums can undergo tooth whitening procedure. If you have a restoration in your mouth, make sure to inform the dentist about the same during your visit. Tooth whitening works only with natural teeth and not with artificial tooth materials. Our dentist may recommend professional tooth cleaning before performing whitening process. Through professional cleaning plaque and tartar are cleared from the oral cavity. This ensures that there are less chances of dental infection and the whitening process is effective. We take pictures of your teeth and measure the brightness using a shade scale. The whitening process starts with application of protective gel over gums. Whitening agents commonly contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These peroxides enter the porous enamel layer and undergo oxidation to clear coloring pigments that stain your teeth. The whitening gel is applied over teeth surface and a bright light is shined over teeth to accelerate the oxidation process. The entire process may take about 1 hour to complete. On completion of tooth whitening, we measure the brightness once again to record the changes. Patients are advised on how to take care of their bright teeth. Proper maintenance of oral hygiene and following a healthy lifestyle can make the brightness last longer.
